The Kids Keep You Young

07-Aug-2016

I knew I wanted to stay involved at the elementary school level because those kids keep you young and are so appreciative of any time you spend with them.

I got involved with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters In School Mentoring program in the fall of 2013. My youngest daughter just entered high school and I had some free time. I had been a BIG volunteer at her school, in class, on trips, on school council and PTA. I knew I wanted to stay involved at the elementary school level because those kids keep you young and are so appreciative of any time you spend with them. My friend Janet Ballantyne had been an In School Mentor for a couple of years and she said it was one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences she had had.

My mentee and I spent the first few weeks getting to know each other just by talking about ourselves and what we were interested in. In our first year we spent time doing crafts and a lot of time playing games and one of his favourite activities is decorating cupcakes and giving them to his class. We have continued with the cupcakes this year but not so much the crafts. He does have a passion for video games and while we don't play them when we are together he explains them to me. In 2016 we have not been doing cupcakes but we have been playing Monopoly for 7 weeks straight!

In 2015 I got another mentee. He is completely different from my other one. He enjoys talking and telling stories. We have started to play ping pong when we get together.

I look forward to seeing my mentees every week and how they have changed and to find out what is going on in their lives. I would recommend this experience to other people. It is only a one hour commitment every week, same time, same place and the kids have one on one time to look forward to with a caring adult.
