Getting involved in BBBS is a great experience and I am so happy that I made the choice to join! Nikki Johnson, BA

After graduating from University in the summer of 2012 and moving back to my hometown of St. Thomas, I wanted to find a way to become involved with my community. I had heard great things about Big Brothers, Big Sisters through a friend who worked at the Waterloo branch. In high school I was heavily involved in peer mentoring and peer tutoring and thought that BBBS could be a good fit for me and could be a lot of fun. Since November of 2013 I have been matched with a teen from St. Thomas and have absolutely loved every minute of it.

Our relationship over the last two years has grown into a strong, fun and comfortable friendship that I am certain will last for many more years. Being her Big Sister has been tremendously rewarding as I have seen her grow, learn new things and experience unique adventures that she would not regularly get to partake in. While taking on the BBBS motto of low cost, no cost, my little and I have been able to take advantage of the many great events and services available in Elgin County such as; hiking Dalewood trails, skating on the outdoor rink, going to the art gallery, attending movie in the park, walking on the beach, go tobogganing and many other free or cheap ways around the community. One of our favorite places in St. Thomas to visit and explore is Pinafore park.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Elgin and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a way to get involved in the community and to make an impact in another person’s life. Not only have I been positively influencing her life, she has become influential in mine  and I consider her a true friend. We confide in each other, laugh, cry and most importantly have fun – what more could I have asked for. Getting involved in BBBS is a great experience and I am so happy that I made the choice to join!
