Making a Personel Difference

I got involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters because I wanted a volunteer opportunity where I was able to make a personal difference in someone’s life.  I had recently had my first child, which led me to really want to focus my attention on being there for the children of the community.

Being a new mother, I chose to participate in the In-school mentoring program because of the meeting time requirements. A one-hour visit with my mentee once a week during the school year was definitely something I could easily fit into my schedule. I was matched with a “little” from the elementary school I attended as a child. It meant a lot to me to be matched with someone from this particular school because I grew up there. My Mentee is in grade 8 so we spend a lot of our visit talking, laughing, and trying out various DIY (do it yourself) projects we pick out together from a website called Pinterest. For me, grade 8 was a very difficult time in my life and I am so glad that I can not only share my experiences with my mentee, but also be a positive part of hers.

After the first few months of being involved in the In-School mentoring program I was really driven to also become a Big Sister. I was matched with a 7-year-old little sister. We have so much fun together. The commitment aspect of this program is a little heavier than the in-school mentoring program, but it is easily fit into my schedule because our visits can be very flexible if needed. My little sister and I meet every Monday evening for 1.5-2.5 hours. We spend a lot of the time baking, doing crafts, playing games, and playing outside.

Meeting with my little sister is especially rewarding. I look forward to seeing her every week because of the smile and excitement I see from her when I greet her at her door. It really means so much to me that I can be a positive role model for my little sister. We have a very special bond and I hope it will continue to grow throughout our lifetime.

I strongly recommend Big Brothers Big Sisters to my friends and peers frequently. It is honestly such an amazing organization. There is nothing more rewarding then being there for and giving back to the future of our community.
