Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

Many of us were lucky enough to have had a mentor step into our lives during out formative years - at that time when we needed them the most. A mentor who treated us with respect and in turn earned ours. A mentor who valued our ideas, included us, and encouraged us. A mentor who taught us that doing good is every bit as important as doing well. A mentor who helped us find the confidence to be true to ourselves and make smart choices.

Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds is a program for girls in grades seven and eight and is led by a trained, screened female volunteer mentors. The program is designed to positively shape the lives of girls by helping build positive self image and setting them on a path to reach their full potential in life.

Go Girls mentors are women who are:
  • between the ages of 18 and 30ish
  • passionate about healthy, active living
  • who enjoy working with 12 to 14 year old girls
  • able to commit 2 hours per week (plus prep/travel time) for a seven week program

Each seven week Go Girls! program has 2 mentors matched with 6 to 8 girls. This provides an opportunity for the girls and mentors to participate in fun, educational games and activities that encourage mentor/participant relationship building.

Each session incorporates fun activities based around active living, balanced eating and feeling good (positive body image). By helping the girls become more informed about healthy choices and by conveying the message that being active can be fun, the girls become more equipped to incorporate these values into their lives. All materials are provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters of St Thomas-Elgin. A snack is incorporated into the balanced eating part of each session. Sessions are 90 minutes in length. Having the flexibility of a 3 to 4 hour block of time during the elementary school day on at least one week day will greatly increase the chance that you can be placed in a school. Occasionally, a program runs right after school. Programs are offered throughout the school year in the fall, winter, and spring.

Each session builds on skills learned in the previous sessions.

Session 1: Introduce the girls to the main themes of the Go Girls!; laying the foundation of trusting relationships for the group.

Session 2: Developing positive group dynamics; explore communication and leadership skills.

Session 3: Understanding influences on girls; become more aware of the differences between "inner self" and "outer persona".

Session 4: Towards a new me; listen to your body and reflect on how feelings about your body have changed since childhood.

Session 5: Taking control; assessing options and making healthy, positive decisions.

Session 6: Setting goals and making decisions; reflecting on peer pressure.

Session 7: Celebrating our successes.

The Go Girls! program is designed to benefit both the participants and the mentors. Through the program specific training and actual program facilitations, mentors practice valuable and transferable communication, leadership and group/trust building skills. Mileage is reimbursed for mentors driving from London and every attempt is made to arrange carpooling for mentors without a car. Friends and classmates have the option of mentoring together.
