Eat Smart, Play Smart, Live Smart

In the areas of gender and education research, key findings state that male adolescents frequently struggle with issues of body image, low levels of physical activity and unhealthy eating practices. Sound familiar?

Game On!

In other words, boys and young men today go through much the same turmoil growing up as most of us did in our day. The journey to adulthood is never an easy one, but it can be smoothed out with the guidance and support of a mentor who cares and understands. More importantly, mentoring can help cement an active, healthy lifestyle that nourishes self esteem and confidence.

Game On! mentors are men who are:

  • between the ages of 18 and 30ish
  • enthusiastic, caring and energetic
  • passionate about healthy, balanced living
  • interested in helping grade 7 & 8 boys build self-esteem
  • able to commit about two hours per week (plus prep/travel time) for a seven week program
The Game On! program is for boys aged 12 to 14. The goal of the program is to provide boys with information and support to make informed choices about a range of healthy lifestyle practices.

The program strives to do the following:

  • through the lens of healthy living, openly discuss current and pressing issues facing boys and young men
  • build appreciation for the benefits of healthy eating habits
  • promote physical exercise through the use of non-traditional activities
  • instill respect for socio-economic, ethno-cultural and racial diversity
  • encourage leadership skills and independent thinking
  • and above all, make a difference

Each Game On! program has the 2 mentors matched with 8 boys. This provides an opportunity for the boys and mentors to participate in fun, educational games and activities that encourage mentor/participant relationship building.

Weekly sessions incorporate activities based around active living, balanced eating and healthy body image. A snack is incorporated into the balanced eating part of each session. Each of the seven sessions is 75 minutes in length. Having the flexibility of a 3 to 4 hour block of timing during the elementary school day on at least one week day will greatly increase the change that you can be placed in a school. Occasionally, a program runs right after school. Programs are offered through the school year in the fall, winter and spring.

The Game On! program is designed to benefit both the participants and the mentors. through the program specific training and actual program facilitation, mentors practice valuable and transferable communication, leadership and group/trust building skills. Mileage is reimbursed for mentors travelling from London. Friends and classmates have the option of mentoring together.
